In the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, there lies the major urban city at the center of the extensive land of Al-Ahsa Oasis. This district is called the Al-Hofuf, which is nearest region to one of the largest land-based fields in the world, the famous Ghawar oil field.

Al-Hofuf is one of the cities that uphold the country’s rich culture that it is considered as a cultural region. There are also a lot of academic institutions such as the King Faisal University located in the heart of this city that offer services in agriculture, animal resource and veterinary field. What’s more? The city is a home to schools that provide education on home economics, medicine and dentistry to women as well.

The main industries in Al-Hofuf include manufacturing of items such as copper and brass products and cloth. Residents could also make profits out of the oasis that bore crops when watered by many springs. Such produces include fruit rice, barley, dates and wheat. In this area, you could also find a famous camel market. Camels were used in the past as the primary mode of transportation; however, these animals are used primarily for racing these days.

Other economic activities given of high importance in this district include food processing and horse breeding. The people also benefit from the nearby oil fields of Shimanya.

The city is blessed with a tropical climate. It only has two seasons which range from hot and arid summer to cold and misty winter. Sometimes during winter, the city is lucky enough to experience rain. In summer, it could not escape the harsh, extreme humidity as it nestled far enough from the coast of the Arabian Gulf. Hence, high humidity during the summer time should be expected.

This city is also remembered in Saudi Arabia’s version of Romeo and Juliet. The burial place of Laila and Majinoon, the star-crossed lovers in the Arab and Muslim literature, is said to be located in this place. In another popular fiction, it has been said the Queen of Sheba has also come by from her empire in Yemen.

Lima, Peru is a city full of surprises. Layer upon layer you will find rich culture, an endearing people, and a fascinating history. Located right on the coast of the Pacific, and is one of the largest desert towns of the world.

Lima is a city of contrasts. There are shanty towns that mark its being a third world country, but there are also modern skyscrapers, resorts, colonial mansions and shopping malls. Aside from that, it also has many Incan ruins and artifacts that survived the Spanish conquest and modern civilization. The city of Lima has plenty to offer to the tourists, has its own identity that sets it apart from other South American cities and countries.

Lima Weather and Climate

Lima climate is generally subtropical, generally mild and pleasantly warm. Lima remains very dry and arid throughout the year, and rain is virtually unheard of here. Thus, wear light clothes, and leave those umbrellas and jackets behind.

Lima Tourist Sights and Attractions

When visiting the capital of Peru, make sure to stop by the following sights and attractions:

  • Blue Hill – It is the oldest public space in the city of Lima.
  • Cathedral of Lima – built in January 18, 1535, the cathedral was originally a modest temple built by Jeronimo de Loayza. The cathedral can be found in the main Square of Lima.
  • Plaza de Acho – Served as the city’s main bull ring. Many celebrations are held here each year, including the famous Lord of Miracles Festival on October.
  • Plaza Italia – an early 17th century bronze fountain and has numerous churches. Many weekend events are held here, with many markets and stalls.

Netanya

Netanya beachfront resort
Photo by: Emmanuel Dyan, Creative Commons

Although Netanya sits beside the Mediterranean Sea, it does not have the same wide sandy beaches found further north or the ideal deep diving waters south of the city. However, it does have 14 kms of beaches that still make for some tourist trade. It also boasts, at present, of having Israel’s premiere Golf Course – if not the only golf course in all of Israel. Although some die-hard golfers argue that it is the best thing to do in Netanya, there are many things to do here besides playing golf.

One can take a tour in the Beit Aharon Reservation to view burial caves from the Byzantine era, see Israel’s unique soft-shell turtles, stroll through HaSharon Park’s hiking trails, visit a reproduction of the settlements of ancient Israel, visit a family recreation park complete with trains, pool rides and amusing activities involving motorcycles and trucks or go to a water theme park south of the city. As it is anywhere in Israel, good restaurants and coffee shops abound.

Netanya, or Nathania, as it is sometimes spelled is a fast-growing city with many English-speaking immigrants arriving from the US, Canada and the UK; which explains the presence of the golf course. Due to the concentration of Western folk, the culture in this city is quite different from that of other Israeli cities, easing the sense of culture shock for many. In 2007, the small city had a population of 175,000 (which is considered big by Israeli standards) and estimates predict the figure to double by 2020.

Due to the volume of permanent residents in the area, Netanya boasts of several museums and galleries, some of which allow free admission to specific groups. One such museum that allows free admission to all soldiers and policemen is the Museum of Jewish Legions that pays tribute to the Jewish Legions of WW II. Other unique museums are the Tractor History Museum and the Han Museum Hadera. Many art galleries in the area offer exhibits on a rotating basis, depending on the visiting artists involved, so it is best to keep an eye open for such announcements.

With all the English-speaking residents here, Netanya City is a great place for a westerner to establish base camp for an extended visit of Israel. Aside from the warm weather here, the ambience and mellow pace will make many feel right at home.

Palmyra

Would you like to visit Palmyra? If you do, then here are some tips about the place that can help you when you do.

Historical Background:

Palmyra can trace its roots of existence since the 1st century. Since that time, it was known to the people by these two names:

The Bride of the Desert – mainly because it is an important oasis where travelers can rest and replenish themselves prior to continuing their travel to the Syrian Desert.
Tadmor – a Semitic term that literally means “the town that repels” or the “indomitable town”. According to scholars the place rightfully acquired that name because even when the city was conquered by Romans and the Muslim Arabs, it was pretty much left on its own.

Climate:

The temperature in Palmyra can range from 1.80°C to 38.35°C. The hottest months according to their climate chart are in between June to September. So if you plan to visit during those months, make sure you wear light pieces of clothing. You may also want to invest in a good hat, sunglasses and sun block to protect you from the hot Middle Eastern sun.

Places to Visit:

Temple of Baal – remains of a temple bearing an Oriental design. The temple was built originally as a worship place for the masses where sacrificial offering was commonly done. Later on, the same site was transformed to a Byzantine temple, then a mosque and finally a fortress for the Arabic and Byzantine warriors/ defenders.

Valley of Tombs – this site is somewhat comparable to the pyramids of Egypt. Here you can find the dead of significant Palmyran families whose bodies lie in sophisticated burial chambers.

The Museum – here you can find antiquities that date as far as the 1st Century when the city was established. But apart from those relics, a lot of people visit the museum to see the unique exhibit of Palmyran statues that show how locals used to dress up in the old days.

Arab Castle – this castle was built on a hill during the 17th century. Though the climb up and the descent down can be a little steep, the view of the ruins from the top of the hill is all well worth it.

Baruun-Urt

Mongolia is a vast mix of landscape found alongside Russia and China. Mongolian tourism has become the economy’s main feat along with cashmere and mining.

Experience a nomadic life in one of its cities, Baruun-Urt, the capital of Sükhbaatar. Baruun-Urt, Mongolia is a very small obscure town situated in the middle of a desert. Some locals in this scruffy, poor city are employed in the nearby zinc mine owned by a Chinese investor or at a coal mine in the northern part of the town.

One thing you can experience in Baruun-Urt is an experience similar to astronauts who have landed in the surface of the moon. This happens during the cold season when it is almost impossible to go out and walk in the open because of the barren and freezing surroundings.

Don’t miss to check out the wrestling Uzemchin brass-studded jacket in your visit to Baruun-Urt museum. The museum displays a fine collection of tribe costumes that represent the three ethnic tribes that reside in the town. The majority of the natives are the Khalkh, the Daringanga who are natives of the south of Sükhbaatar, and the Uzemchin found in the aimags of Dornod and Sükhbaatar.
Another attraction that you should not fail to visit is the Erdenemandal Khiid monastery which was built around 1830. Inside are seven temples and about a thousand monk residents. A new monastery is situated in the west about 400m from the square. Around 108 different stupas or dome-shaped shrine surrounds the new monastery.

Stellenbosch

Wine tasting stop in Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch, South Africa is a town in close proximity to the historical city of Cape Town. Next to Cape Town, Stellenbosch is oldest European settlement in the province. This is town was founded by the Dutchman Simon Van der Stel, the first Commander and the last Governor of the Cape Colony. The town is currently part of the greater metro area of Cape Town.

Stellenbosch is famously known for the numerous oak trees planted Van der Stel, so much so that it is known as the City of Oaks. Like in Cape Town, the climate in Stellenbosch is Mediterranean, with dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Because of the many Oak trees, the air here is fresh. Pollution from metropolitan Cape Town hardly reaches the town because the strong southeast winds (called Cape Doctor) along the cape clean the air and blows the pollution away.

Stellenbosch is a very simple town. But one industry it is famous for is winemaking. The town’s Mediterranean climate is perfect for winemaking. And moreover, the town is situated in an area where rich soil is abundant− on the foot of the Cape Fold mountain range. On the outskirts of Stellenbosch, there are numerous vineyards. The most famous wine Stellenbosch produces is the Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is starting to gain fame across the world’s wine community.

Stellenbosch is a great place to visit for nature lovers. There are so many places to discover. The flora here is majestic. Nature trailers can trek the many corners of the Papegaaiberg or the Parrot Mountain, the Stellenbosch Mountain, Simonsberg or Simon’s Mountain, Jonkershoek Mountains and the Great Drakenstein Mountains. Daredevils can try to scale the highest mountain points in town: Victoria Peak, at 1,600 meters; and Die Tweeling Pieke or The Twin Peaks, at 1,500 meters.

The town of Stellenbosch is a very humble place. It is quite as compared to its neighbor, Cape Town. But here, the epitome of simple South African living is seen and there’s always beauty in simplicity. Stellenbosch is just one of the many lush landscapes of South Africa.

It is 440 meters long and is lined by numerous cafes and restaurants. It has many fountains including the spectacular La Rotonde which is so large that it makes up a roundabout at one end of the street.

The Granet Museum is a restored museum house that contains an impressive collection of over six-hundred works of art by Granet, Ingres, Preti, Rembrandt, Rigaud and Rubens. It also features exquisite artworks by local painters. The Museum can be found in the Quartier Mazarin and also offers access to the gardens.

The Atelier Cezanne or Cezanne’s studio is another popular attraction in Aix-en-Provence. It is situated in the Lauves hill with a breathtaking view of the Sainte Victoire Mountain. The studio was designed by Cezzane himself and it is said that he personally ordered how his works should be arranged.

The Vendome Pavilion is a sight to behold because it features an 18th century mansion that was built in 1665. It was said to have been the illicit rendezvous retreat for Cardinal Duc de Vendome and his mistress, Madame de Rascas. The gardens of the mansion have intimate and hidden spots where the Cardinal and his lover spent most of their time.

The Cathedrale St. Sauveur d’Aix is said to stand on sacred grounds. It was first a pagan temple, which then became a Roman temple and is now a Christian Church. The construction of the church was often interrupted by wars, plagues and other disasters which is why it was only finally completed during the 15th century even though construction originally began in the 5th century. During the French Revolution, the panel above the doors was lost and up to this day, remains an empty space. The statues inside the church were also robbed of their heads and the heads they are now sporting are only replacements.

Deserts and dry weather conditions usually describe the country of Turkmenistan. This description is generally true but this is not an obstacle for the tourism value of the cities of the region. In Central Asia, countries are mostly identifiable because of their preserved cultures and rich histories. A city in Turkmenistan that is worth a visit is Kerki.

The original Persian name of Kerki is Karkuh, when translated is Deaf Mountain. The usual beaches can be found in this town that is found in the Lebap Province in the eastern region of the country. Aside from this, tourists can also go hiking or trekking in the nearby mountains when the weather is not that hot. Usually, in the month of August, the temperature can reach up to 50°C and is not very ideal for swimming or hiking. Most people that have been there suggest that tourists visit in the months of September to early November when the weather isn’t that arid.

There are also numerous structures and buildings that are worth visiting in this regions. Most of them showcase the rich culture of the country to intricately designed cloths and other artifacts. Even the shops that sell souvenir items like rugs try to show the tourists that there are interwoven cultures within this region.

It is also relatively easier to reach this town as compared to other parts of the country because there is already an Airport in Kerki that makes it accessible to tourists and businessmen alike.

Things to do while in Lentvaris, Lithuania:

Old Building of the Train Station – although it is merely a train station to many, it serves as an important landmark in the history of railroad. T was constructed way back in 1862 and was the first train station in Lithuanian territory. It still has that old red brick literature. Inside the building are some information on the history and paintings of railroads and trains.

Eduard Andre Park – Eduard Andre is a famous French park designer, who was invited to Lentvaris to design some parks. It is said that his best designed parks can be found in Lithuania (Traku Voke, Planga, Uzutrakis, and of course Lentvaris). Make sure not to miss visiting the park for a chance to unwind.

The Palace of Tiskevicius – the Red Palace of Tiskevicius has an English neo-Gothic style, an architectural style that’s quite rare in Lithuania. The palace stands on the banks of Lentvaris Lake.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary – More than a hundred years old, the church has a unique neo-Romantic architectural style, with a little Spanish and Moorish influence.

If you were to go to Estonia, you would probably think of visiting Tallin or Parnu. Although those are pretty good choices, tourists already flock to those places because those cities are famous around the world. However, most natives of the country know that beauty does not only rest on those two places. You can actually find so much more in Kuressaare, Estonia.

Visiting this town can be such an adventure. Staying here, you can mix around and socialize with the locals; dine and drink with them and enjoy a fun time just walking around the streets. The town is pretty small so transportation in moving around is not a problem. You can basically walk to most of your destinations. And speaking of destinations at Kuressaare, one would find it appealing to visit the famous Bishopric Castle which is the town’s main attraction. This castle was built around 1260. You can go inside and buy some souvenirs or just have coffee in their café.

As you walk in Raekojo street, you will see a line-up of old buildings. You can then visit the town hall for more tourist information or go to their museum and art gallery.

And because this town is pretty much understated in most travel information sites, food and hotel accommodation are fairly cheap compared to the bigger cities. You have the option to stay in a hotel or a Bed and Breakfast.
