The capital of Belize, Belmopan, became the country’s capital after Belize City suffered major damages during a hurricane that occurred in 1961. Since Belmopan is found closer to the geographic center of Belize, it was considered the safer alternative to Belize City which is open to the sea and is not a low-lying seaside area like Belize City.

To get to Belmopan, you can travel by car via the Western Highway or the Hummingbird Highway. You can also get to Belmopan from Belize City via what is called the batty bus lines or novelos which travel frequently between these two cities. You can get to Belize City via some of the more popular International and American carriers like US Air, Continental and Delta and get to Belmopan by road.

If you want to get around the city and to see the sights, you have the option of taking a taxi or renting a car however most tourists prefer to walk around this small city to get a real feel of the place. You should not forget to see some of the more well know tourist areas of Belmopan which include the Market Square, the Belize Archives Center, the National Assembly and the Department of Archaeology. You should also try to come here during certain times of the year when certain festivals and events take place like the Valentines Cycle Race in February and the Agriculture and Trade Show in May which features numerous farming products, equipment and floral displays for all to enjoy.
