Gdansk is Poland’s marine capital. It is one of the country’s most important centers of trade, economic life and culture. The Pomeranian province of Poland has Gdansk for a capital as well as its largest city. Being a very vital port, history has shown it to be a center of trade. In the Tri-City Complex which is made up of the fashionable resort town of Sopot, the seaport of Gdynia and Gdansk, it has become the most popular among the three.

Gdansk was basically flattened to the ground after World War II. Even before the war though, it has already experienced tragedy in the hands of the Teutonic Knights during the 14th century. Despite all of these drawbacks, the city and its people proved to be determined to come back and managed to successfully restore it to its original glorious state in 20 years. It can now boast of a bevy of beautifully painted buildings, fascinating sights and interesting Hanseanic architecture that has become irresistible for tourists all over the world.

A visit to Poland should include several days in Gdansk or you will not have enough time to go through all of the attractive and memorable sites this city has to offer. A guided tour is best acquired to ensure a thorough visit of the many great spots. Some of the tourist highlights are the Upland Gate which is usually the starting point of your tour, then you will pass by the main town hall which holds the History Museum of Gdansk, then go through the Golden House, the Neptun Fountain as well as the Artus Court till you reach the Green Gate. You can have dinner at any of the fashionable cafes or restaurants that you will see along the waterfront and find there Europe’s biggest crane, the Gdansk Crane which houses the maritime Museum. You should not miss the Ulica Mariacka, which is the city’s most breathtakingly looking street with the largest brick church in the world called the St. Mary’s.
