Persepolis was once the thriving cultural and art center of Iran and represented the different architectural ideologies of the Achaemenids’ empire. The site, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful and sought after historical locations in the world had long been buried by sand and dust for centuries until its discovery in the 1930’s, by the excavation team of Erich Frederich Schmidt. If you’re visiting Shiraz, make sure you take a day trip to Persepolis city. You can then continue on to Nagsh-e-Rostam and visit the royal tombs that still stand.
