Delaware

Delaware, the second smallest state, it is located in the eastern section of the Delmarva Peninsula in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania in the north, the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, New Jersey, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east, and by Maryland in the south and west. The capital of Delaware is Dover, while the largest city Wilmington. It is divided into three counties: New Castle, Kent County, and Sussex. The state is also known by the following nicknames: The Small Wonder, the Blue Hen State, The Diamond State, and officially, The First State.

The state is literally The First State as it was the first to ratify the Constitution of the United States. One of the founding fathers that hailed from Delaware, Rev John Witherspoon, has the distinction of being the only active member of the clergy to sign the Declaration and to coin the word “Americanism”. He was more active in the field of education than in politics. His legacy from being as the sixth president of Princeton University, then known as the College of New Jersey, included students during his tenure who later on became president (James Madison), vice-president (Aaron Burr), three Supreme Court justices, and sixty members of Congress. One legacy of significance to pop culture is Reese Witherspoon as a direct descendant.

The nickname The Diamond State comes from the Delaware Diamond, the State star. Located in the constellation of Ursa Major (Great Bear), it is the first star on the International State Registry to be registered to an American state.
