New Jersey

New Jersey is the 3rd state to be admitted in the Union on December 18, 1787.It is located in the Mid-Atlantic of the United States. It is bordered by New York to the north, to the east by the Hudson River, Newark Bay, Upper New York Bay, Raritan Bay, the Kill Van Kull, the Arthur Kill, Sandy Hook Bay, Westchester County, Long Island, New York City, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered to the west by Delaware Bay, Delaware River, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The state capitol is the city of Trenton, while the largest city is Newark.

For more than 2800 years, the Native Americans inhabited the area. In the early 1600s, European settlements were started by the Swedes and Dutch. Later on, the English came and seized control over the region. It was named as the Province of New Jersey and was granted as a colony to Sir George Carteret and first Baron of Stratton, John Berkeley. The name “Jersey” is named after the largest British Channel Islands.

During the Revolutionary War, New Jersey plays an important in several decisive battles. During the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, cities like Paterson and Trenton contributed in driving the revolution through companies originating from the state. At present, New Jersey ranks first with the highest population density. On the other hand, it comes second in terms of highest median income in all of the 50 states where Maryland comes first in the list.
