Seydisfjordur is named after the fjord it is next to. It is surrounded by mountains – Mt. Bjolfur to the West and Strandartindur, with a higher peak, to the East.

Cultural Attractions

Seydisfjordur is one of the country’s most picturesque towns. It is where a lot of well-preserved old wooden buildings are situated. These houses are chalet-styles, with its parts and pieces purchased from Norway, by well-off merchants and assembled afterward.

This town is a rather artsy community, although the population is very small (around 800). It is a frequently-visited destination. There is a cultural festival, A Seyoi, held from June to July. Lunga, a music festival, starts as a workshop of some sort where established artists train younger people. The culminating activity is a concert.

Hiking

There are several waterfalls in the vicinity. Such natural sights make hiking a pleasurable experience. One popular hiking path starts at the center of the town, following the East bank of the river Fjardara, which flows through the town center. All in all, there are 25 waterfalls upstream. During the winter, people ski in an area in the Fjadarheidi mountain pass.

If you want an off-the-beaten-path adventure, you can go hiking in the rarely visited, unspoiled fjords North and South of Seydisfjordur. There are also good hiking trails from the town to Lodmundarfjordur as well as to Mjoifjordur.

Other Things to Do

You can go fishing for cod, coalfish and haddock. There are also kayaking, cycling and sailing tours. You can go kayaking for one hour in the harbor, or opt for a 2-day excursion to Skalanes, 12 miles from Seydisfjordur. You can take a walk along the north shore of the town and take a look at the Dwarf’s rock, a rock formation. At the end of the road is a four-wheel-drive track that leads to an abandoned farm, with a lighthouse nearby.

Seydisfjordur is a hiking enthusiast’s paradise, and a town full of cultural attractions to boot. Surely, when you visit the town, you will never run out of things to do.

There are plenty of things to love about Xiamen, China. Whether you’re a student who’s fortunate to be enrolled in a university wedged between the sea and the mountains and has great architecture (like Xiamen University), an expatriate looking for a place to dwell, or you love visiting museums and enjoying a lovely island stay, Xiamen will not disappoint. Xiamen’s climate is pleasant most times of the year.

Regarded as one of China’s cleanest cities, Xiamen lies on the southeast coast of China. Overseas suppliers and businessmen find Xiamen’s allure irresistible, choosing to dwell in the place with their families. Those who love the fresh sea breeze love visiting Yuandang Lake in the Central Business District. Also worth checking out is Zhenzhuwan, best suited for dwellers who love taking long walks along the beach and mingling with both tourists and locals. The added bonus is the opportunity to listen to the Opera taking place at the beachfront Theatre, or to watch films in an outdoor arena.

A must-see spot is Gulangyu Island, dubbed as “Garden on the Sea.” It’s a serene island which lends a feel of China during colonial times. Visitors will find colonial-style buildings, a bird sanctuary, and an overhead tram at Gulangyu. It is considered as one of China’s major scenic spots. Special places of interest include the Sunlit Rock, Shuzhuang Park, Gangzihou Bathing Beach. To get to Gulangyu Island, visitors take the ferry from Xiamen. Vehicles are off limits on the island. People who are not too fond of night life will find living in Gulangyu Island blissful. There are old houses and villas built centuries ago.

If an environment that melds tradition with modernity is more to your liking, Lianhua is the place to visit or dwell. The place has well-managed western villas. People also get to listen to Gezixi Opera, a troupe employed by dwellers to celebrate special occasions. For fantastic scenery of the sea, though, people need to walk a long way.

Raring to shop? A recently opened antique market, Tangsong Antique Town, brought the number of antique markets in Xiamen to seven. There are also several malls and hotel complexes in the city proper.

If temples fascinate you South Putuo Temple on the southern part of Xiamen showcases Heaven King’s Hall, the Daxiong Hall, the Great Compassion Hall, all built in exquisite, awesome style. Buddhists, on the other hand, flock to the Nanputuo temple, a Buddhist temple built during the Tang Dynasty and offers a glimpse of sculptures and works of art, including the cordial Maitreya, the Laughing Buddha. Another attraction is Mount Wuji, which was listed on the World Nature Heritage Site List in 1999.

Zermatt

Zermatt – A quiet evening

Travelers and thrill seekers would most probably make Zermatt as one of their destinations if they want to have a wonderful mountaineering and skiing experience. Being the starting point for hiking in the Swiss mountains, Zermatt can lead you all the way to its most famous peak, the Matterhorn, which was the last alpine mountain to be conquered by British troops in the 1800’s.

It is also the peak where the famous Toblerone chocolate was modeled after.

Hikers and skiers won’t find it difficult to get a view of the mountain, because cable cars and chair lifts were made available for them. These cables and chair lifts carry them all the way to Matterhorn and allow them also to cross into Italy through the Cervinia cable car station. Throughout the year, a lot of professional climbers, backpackers and tour groups come to Zermatt to experience this one-of-a-kind ride.

The skiing zone in Zermatt has four areas namely Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn, and Schwarzsee. Sunnegga can be accessed directly through the railway, a gondola, and a cable car. Gornergrat would contain shopping centers at its summit, along with hotels and restaurants. Matterhorn is also accessible via cable cars, and skiing in this part of the mountain is very difficult. Despite this, it is being marketed as a beautiful skiing resort all year round. It is only being closed during its off seasons from May to July.

One thing that’s also good about the town is that the government takes care not to allow pollution to obscure the view of the Matterhorn. To do this, they designed their cars to be battery driven to be free from combustion. These electrical vehicles are primarily used by most residents, with the exception of emergency fire trucks, ambulances, garbage trucks and municipal buses which use combustion engines.

The prices of shopping goods and foods in Zermatt are reasonable, and they vary from one shop to another. The weather and climate in the village are typically mild to moderate in summer and snowy cold during the winter season which starts from the month of December to February.

The relaxing scenery, and distinct aroma and taste of wine just makes you want to savor your moments in this charming city. This is exactly what a typical experience will be in Montreux, Switzerland.

Montreux has been a significant settlement even in the Roman times, when viticulture or growing of grapes was introduced in the town. Knowing this, it is quite obvious that wine is an important product produced in Montreux.

Grapes were not the only plants enjoying the mild climate of the town. If you walk through its streets and surroundings, you would notice the abundance of pine trees, cypresses, and palm trees that grow everywhere.

The Chillon Castle which is a famous highlight of the town is also noteworthy to visit, as well as the magnificent Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, and the modern Montreux Music and Convention Center. The castle, which is now a museum, has been a fortress for Bonivard for four years, and gave Lord Byron an inspiration for his poem “The Prisoners of Chillon” in the year 1816.

The Clarens cemetery is also described as one of the most beautiful parks in the town. Many celebrities are resting underneath this attractive park.

Montreux has a railway which allows passengers to witness the beautiful points of western Switzerland and transports them all the way to Rochers-de-Naye. The stunning view of Lake Geneva and Bernese Alps can be seen by anyone who rides the train.

They also have this Chocolate Train that takes the visitors to Nestle chocolate factory for tasting during special days.

Besides site-seeing, winter sports enthusiasts will enjoy skiing in this region. Water sports during the summer season are also perfect for this ideal place. The lake serves as a venue for sports, bathing and cruising alike.

Lots of restaurants are present in the town, and in December, you can experience one of the most amazing Christmas markets Switzerland has.

Visiting Montreux is definitely a worthwhile experience that any visitor can have; despite other claims that it is a dull part of Switzerland.

One of the countries in Central Asia that should be included in a traveller’s itinerary is Turkmenistan. Though it is a country that is not recognized by everyone, it is teeming with great architecture as well as historical and cultural amenities.

The largest and capital city of Turkmenistan is Ashgabat, which, in Russian or Persian, loosely translates to “The City of Love”. It was originally founded by the Russians in 1818 to serve as a main terminal for the Transcaspian Railroad and also as a fort. It is near Nisa and Parthian and is said to be built along the Silk Road.

Relatively, Ashgabat is considered as a young city since it was only recently established, even the buildings and structures in the city are relatively new and modern. Mostly mosques serve as tourist destinations in the city; these include the Azadi Mosque, which looks like the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, the Khrezety Omar Mosque and the more modern Iranian Mosque. There are scientific and historical buildings as well like the Ashgabat Museum of National History which plays hosts to several artifacts dating back to the Persian time.

A visitor should also pass by the Arch of Neutrality which shows a statue of former President Niyazov (also called Turkmenbashi) which is made out of pure gold and rotates so that it can face the sun everyday when it rises.

The weather in Ashgabat is mostly preferred for strolls around the city because it can be dry at times. This can be attributed to the areas around it which includes the Kara-Kum desert in the North and the Kopet-Dag mountain ranges in the South.
