When in Italy, a visit to the Southern city of Naples is a must for you to have the ultimate experience of Italian culture. Located about two hours South of Rome in the region of Campania, Naples is where the most important port in the country’s southern region can be found. It is located north of the Bay of Naples, which is one of the most popular bays in Italy because of its beauty.

Getting around the city of Naples is made easy by several major train lines and buses. There are also ferries that can take you to the other nearby islands, and there is also an airport, Aeroporto Capodichino, that caters to flights to other parts of Italy.

One interesting fact about Naples is that it is where the world-famous pizza originated. Long before we started to enjoy our pizza deliveries of various varieties and toppings, the people of Naples have been enjoying freshly-baked pizza topped with mouthwatering spices and delicious sauce straight out of wood-burning ovens. Today you can enjoy these genuine Italian pizzas that are still being served in the many great pizza places found all over the city. You will surely be treated to a wide array of the best pizzas in the world, because here in Naples, they take pizza seriously.

Other than food, Naples also has many historic and artistic venues to showcase. One of the most famous attractions in Italy is the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. This museum is home to Greek and Roman antiquities that are among the best collections in the world. These include sculptures, gems, mosaics, silver and glass art pieces and objects excavated from the City of Pompeii and other nearby archaeological sites.

Great Italian architecture is also showcased in the City of Naples, through its many churches. Some of these are the Santa Chiara Church that has an interesting museum and a monastery; the Duomo, which is a 13th century cathedral built in honor of San Gennaro, who is the patron of Naples; the Basilica Santa Restituta, the oldest church in Naples that has columns that are believed to have originated from the Temple of Apollo and the 13th century medieval church called San Lorenzo Maggiore, underneath which is lies extensive Greek and Roman remains.

Naples is most populated by tourists during the Christmas Season because of its spectacular displays on the streets. Their specialty is recreating the nativity and in fact they have several nativity workshops in different parts of the city and a great concentration of which is on Via San Gregorio Armeno.

The majority of the tourist spots in the world are becoming less of a sight to behold since they are not able to retain their beauty, not to mention that they are being overshadowed by the developing modernization of different societies. There are places, however, that are still exempt from such cases. One of these places would have to be a beautiful town in Madagascar – Mampikony.

The people in Mampikony believe that by keeping there city neat and organized will not only benefit their tourism income, but will also keep their town healthy and invulnerable from any kind of pollution. This is why the town itself would have to be the spot where tourists should visit.

The people in the streets selling seashells, stones and other natural stuff paired with the festivities that take place in the city make up the defining feature of Mampikony. Tourists will be able to witness the colorful civilization that existed in the area during its early times and how the traditions and culture were passed on to the society that inhabits the town today.

Also, the people in Mampikon are very welcoming and kind to tourists. They make sure that the ones who visit the area will feel at home regardless of where they are at that moment.

With Mampikony retaining its natural beauty, other tourist spots across the globe should follow suit and do something to protect nature from being harmed. Otherwise, people all over the globe will live in an Earth that does not resemble what it should be.

Mountains in Seefeld, Austria

Photo by: Leo-setä , Creative Commons

The little village of Seefeld, Austria is often times overshadowed by the larger nearby city of Innsbruck in terms of popularity as a destination for international tourists. For local Austrians in the know however, Seefeld offers attractions that are disproportionately larger than its small population of just over three thousand residents.

To begin with, its location on a plateau on the northern direction of the River Inn gives it multiple walking paths that are not as challenging as climbing up and going down the mountainous terrains. Its most popular walking path is the one that leads to the Kwarendel natural reserve, especially during spring, summer and autumn. Travelers have the option of either making multiple treks across this reserve on foot or taking trains and cable cars that criss-cross the wider open landscapes of the area. The hot days of summer are best enjoyed swimming in a nearby lake called the Wildsee.

Winter brings challenging areas for cross-country skiing. Seefeld, Austria has a type of landscape that enabled it to host international skiing competitions such as the Nordic events at the 1964 Winter Olympics as well as the 1976 Winter Olympics. Seefeld also became a multiple host of different World Cup competitions. Aside from alpine and cross-country skiing, some of the most popular winter activities that can be enjoyed in Seefeld are winter-hiking trails, ice-skating, sleigh rides, and snow boarding. Skiing schools in the area offer courses and lessons at affordable rates.

Indoor facilities also abundant for tourists who prefer to stay warm. Activities such as tennis, squash, bowling and indoor pool swimming can be enjoyed all day at these locations. The Olympia sports complex has a fully equipped physical fitness center. The town center is distinct with its onion-dome shaped Saint Oswald’s cathedral that dominates the local skyline. Surrounding this church are the many retail shops, clubs, and restaurants that cater to locals and tourists alike.

Big things truly come in small packages – that is a proverbial saying that a place like Seefeld, Austria can prove any time and under any season.

You may have heard of Hope Town, Bahamas, as it lies only 175 miles away from the east of West Palm Beach, Florida. Great Abaco and Little Abaco– the two main Bahamian islands– are on the eastern border composed of a string of small cays which stretch for more than 130 miles. Hope Town is a small village on Elbow Cay.

It may pique your interest to know that the main mode of transportation allowed here are golf carts. In fact, in the main part of the town, only walking and cycling are permitted. Even the petite golf carts are banned. A barge brings most supplies that the area needs weekly. Interesting, don’t you think?

When you are in Hope Town or other parts of Elbow Cay, your main place to stay are houses that are for rent, although some hotels and inns may be available and they provide you with good amenities.

When it comes to attractions, one of the spots you shouldn’t miss is the Hope Town Lighthouse. It is one of the last operating lighthouses in the world which is kerosene-powered. It was constructed in 1862 but did not function until two years later. It has distinct white and red stripes and produces light which can be seen from 23 nautical miles away. This light must have given many sailors hope during past times.

Hope Town, Bahamas may be remote but it is a safe and family-oriented place. It is also very accessible. Aside from the beaches and the lighthouse, the flora and fauna of the area are great as well.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

The St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a Gothic-Romanesque cathedral that is located in the heart of Vienna. The first parish church consecrated in 1147, is the mother church in the district of Vienna.

It has been a living witness to Austria’s history and its colorful roof is the most recognizable symbol in Vienna.

It was built in honor of St. Stephen. It was created from limestone but the pollution and other forms of accumulation have affected it which is the reason that its color turned to black. Restorations have been started to bring the church back to its original color.

The most unique feature of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral is none other that its multicolored roof. It is crafted out of glazed tiles with a mosaic of a double headed eagle. The eagle is the symbol of the Habsburg dynasty.

The bells of the cathedral consist of 23 bells in total. It is said that the composer Beethoven realized his deafness when he saw the birds fly out of the bell tower while they were ringing but he didn’t happen to hear them tolling. The largest bell of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral is officially called St. Mary.

A memorial tablet located outside the cathedral gives the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s relationship with it. It was the composer’s parish church where he was married and where two of his children were baptized. Even his funeral was held at a chapel inside the church which marked his long running connection with the St. Stephen’s Cathedral even in his death.

The St. Stephen’s Cathedral houses several chapels inside it.

1. St. Katherine’s Chapel. The baptismal chapel located in the south tower.

2. St. Barbara’s Chapel. The meditation and prayer chapel located in the north tower.

3. St. Eligius’ Tower. The chapel located in the southeast corner which is dedicated to St. Valentine whose remain, one of the three that was held by various churches, is located in the cathedral.

4. St. Bartholomew’s Chapel. The chapel located above the St. Eligius’ Chapel.

5. The Chapel of the Cross. It is the burial place of Prince Eugene of Savoy and also the location of the funeral of Mozart. It is located in the northeastern corner of the cathedral.

6. St. Valentine’s Chapel. The resting place of one of the three remains of St. Valentine. It is the place where a collection of hundreds of relics from the Stephansdom is located.

The St. Stephen’s Cathedral, more than being a major spiritual edifice in the heart of city, is also the most important religious symbol in Vienna.

Salvador, also known as Salvador da Bahia, is the largest city in the Northeast part of Brazil. It is the capital of Bahia state. It is famous for being the center of Afro-American / Brazilian culture. It became the capital of New World in the southern hemisphere for almost 500 years. Its ports had been venues for trading and the importation of slaves from Africa. For 300 years it had been a busy waterway for ships going to and from America, Europe, Africa, and China. Today, traces of its colonial architecture can still be seen. Its idyllic beaches are pristinely lined with white sands. The mixed culture and spirituality is very interesting and captivating.

The climate in Salvador is mainly rainforest tropical with no specific dry season. Its tourist peak season is from December to March. These months are the festive season in Salvador especially in February, when the celebration of the Carnaval takes place. Salvador has two main areas, the upper and lower town. The upper town or Cidade Alta is the historic area of Salvador situated on a cliff. The monasteries and churches there where built from the 17th century. The lower town or Cidade Baxia became the area for commercial industry since 19th century. The upper town can be accessed on the steep tracks from the harbour of Baia de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay). In 1873 an elevator was constructed to connect the two areas, this elevator is also called Elevador Lacerda.

Salvador is also known as a happy city for its laid back lifestyle and having occasional street parties. It hosts the biggest street party in Brazil called the Carnaval. The Carnaval is an annual event that usually takes place in February. Imagine festivities with samba-reggae-latin music, pounding drum beats, lavish scantily clothed dancers, a very colored flaunty parade and amazing performances. This party lasts for almost a week. Carnaval is said to come from the Italian word carnvale meaning farewell to meat. It’s a tradition that celebrates times before the coming of the Lenten season where no meat is allowed for fasting. The street party originated from unplanned parties made by the lower classes in contrast to the festivities done in houses by the upper class. Today, it is a highly anticipated event by everyone and a must celebration to attend by tourists who want to explore the real Brazilian culture.

Pelourinho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Salvador. It is also known as the Historic Centre of Salvador da Bahia. This neighbourhood is located in the western zone of Salvador. Actually Pelourinho is the whipping post located in the center plaza. This neighbourhood was developed in 17th to 19th century during the New World colonization by the Portugese. This place is architecturally rich and a walking tour is the best way to experience its history.

Photo by: soschilds , Creative Commons

Are you planning to visit Vina del Mar? If you are, then here is a simple travel guide that may definitely come in handy.

How to Get There:

To get to Vina del Mar, you can either take the bus or train. Via bus, the trip may take roughly 90 minutes. And if you want to make sure that you get to your destination, you have to go to either Pajarito or Unibersidad de Santiago Stations to catch the Pullman Bus or the Turbus.

However, if you really are excited to see the place, taking a train may end up to be a better option for you. You can ride Merval – a train company that will be able to take you right in the heart of Vina del Mar in no time.

The Weather:

Weather in Vina del Mar or in Chile in general is pleasant. Here, you get to have a nice summer season from December to February and a mild spring season from September to November. Autumn and winter on the other hand starts by March to May and June to August respectively.

The Top 5 Sights to See:

1. Castle Hill – This is a stunning hill that is overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Valparaiso. On the hill, you can find many beautiful houses and a palace that became a home for many affluent people in Chile. Note though that you cannot have a taxi bring you up there. So if you want to see the view from on top of the hill, you have to prepare yourself to do some serious walking.

2. Fonck Museum – Here you can get a preview of what Easter Island is all about. This is because in front of the museum itself, you get to be welcomed by an authentic moai.

3. Quinta Vergara – This is known to be the residence of the founding family of the city. It is quite famous for the locals because it is one of the places to have impeccable landscape. But apart from the well kept trees and flowers, the residence also has a gallery of paintings that is reflective of this era.

4. Sea Lions – Yes, you can also find them in the beaches of Vina del Mar, especially during autumn and summer. If you want to catch sight of them, you can see them just past Cochoa Beach.

5. Renaca – This is probably the most happening beach in town. Once you get there, during summer you can expect to see a lot of people just laying on the sand – trying to get some sun. Note however, that even if the sun seems to be tempting enough to make you lose your top, don’t because it is against the law there.

The Belvedere Palace

The Belvedere Palace in Vienna

The Belvedere Palace is a majestic example of Baroque architecture in Austria. It was constructed by Johann Lukas Von Hildebrandt for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Hildebrandt had worked many times for the Prince and the Belvedere Palace was considered his masterwork.

The palace was an important highlight of Austrian Baroque and is among the most important Baroque buildings of the 18th century. It was used primarily as a summer venue by its owner.

The Belvedere Palace is a palace complex that consisted mainly of three parts: the Upper Belvedere, the Lower Belvedere, and the garden.

After the death of Prince Eugene, the Belvedere was owned by his successor Victoria who later sold it to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1752.

The Lower Belvedere is notable for the painted ceiling in the Marmorsaal or the Marble Hall. The masterpiece was painted by Martino Altomonte which depicts Prince Eugene as the new Apollo. The Marble Hall also contains a sculpture by the celebrated Baroque sculptor, Balthasar Permoser.

The Upper Belvedere was intended to create a suitable border to the spectacular gardens of the palace. Similar to the lower palace, it also has a Marmorsaal with a painted ceiling done by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone.

The gardens of the palace was originally characterized by an amazing view of graveled pathways and jeax d’eau or water features similar to the Mannerist style of the Italian gardens that is well known before the flourishing of Baroque. It was designed by Dominique Girard, a French architect. However, the gardens of the Belvedere Palace have been modified against its original form because of the efforts to restore it to its previous glamour.

The Belvedere Palace is the present home of two museums which features the best of Austrian Art. In the Lower Belvedere, you will find the Österreichisches Barockmuseum or the Austrian Museum of Baroque Art. The Upper Belvedere, on the other hand, is the location of the Austrian Gallery which features 19th and 20th century Austrian paintings.

If you wish to experience amazing scenery which captures the beauty of Baroque architecture and art at its finest, a visit to the Belvedere Palace is surely worth the trip.

Cartagena

Ever since it was founded in 1533, the Cartagena de Indias or simply referred to as Cartagena has been an important Caribbean port. Often filled with bright, vivid colors and hot, sultry music that accompanies the daily hustle and bustle, it once served as the passageway of gold and silver bound for Europe. Later on, a walled fort was built to protect the city and the shipping trade from looting pirates. Today, it is a favorite tourist destination in Cartagena, Colombia, drawing interest from people all over the world who want to enjoy the city’s rich colonial past and its successful foray into the modern world.

The lure of Cartagena, Colombia is no doubt its Old World charm. The walled city, known as the Ciudad Amarullada, with its tiled roofs, sprawling Spanish balconies, and garden courtyards are enough to send visitors into a stroll along the narrow streets. There is no other city in all of Colombia that can match the beautiful colonial atmosphere that Cartagena proudly still carries. It has been compared to the famed Barrio de Santa Cruz of Sevilla, Spain; Potosi, Bolivia; and Guanajuato, Mexico.

Once in the city, tourists will find the Casa de Marques Valdehoyos a good place to start their explorations. This majestic house, located on Calle Factoria, exemplifies old Cartagena and offers maps to the city. Speaking of majestic houses, the sacred Cartagena’s Cathedral, with its massive exteriors, has survived four centuries – and Sir Francis Drake’s cannons. For more historical education, the Museo de Oro y Arqueloguia, which stands proudly on Plaza Bolivar, provides a notable collection of gold as well as pottery from the world-renowned Sinu culture. Meanwhile, instruments of torture used during the time of the Spanish Inquisition and before and after the Colombian Republic are displayed at the Palacio de la Inquisicion, which by the way remains a fine example of colonial architecture. Another sacred house is the Convento de la Popa, which overlooks the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas and is filled with beautiful flowers, offers a breathtaking view of the city, especially come dusk.

Those who are up for more adventure can find comfort in Parque Nacional Tayrona, a scenic spot composed of white-sand beaches, coral reefs, jungle slopes, and its main attraction – the world’s highest coastal range consisting of steep peaks. This park is very popular with hikers, trekkers, and campers. Newer areas of Cartagena, Columbia, namely El Laguito and Bocagrande, face the Caribbean and are considered the city’s fashionable hotspot of upscale hotels, restaurants, and shops. Here, there is a worthy nightlife that offers dancing until dawn.
